Welfare: A Political Destroyer In The Black Community

Welfare by far, has been a destroyer in the African American community. It is a leading factor in the destruction of the black family. It is a system which was design to tear apart the black family, by allowing black women to receive welfare benefits only if  black men were not present in the home. As a result of this, the welfare system in America, is like a drug in the black community, because it kills one’s desire to want to work, and become a  productive being in our society. Just look around in any large metropolitan area, and, one would notice young girls running around with babies over the place and no responsible male present. I would argue that the African American community was better off without welfare and integration. In fact African Americans as a group, prospered more under segregation than under the welfare system of  integration. During segregation, black daddies were at home. During segregation, blacks had more businesses and owned more land. During segregation, black schools and education may not have been as up to date, as the white schools and educational systems, but, black teachers cared enough, to be sure that black children could adequately read and write, before they graduated from high school. It was not like this system of integration, which only viewed black males as  super athletes, super sex studs, and crazy criminals. When integration started in America, blacks and other minority children, were being taught by individuals who did not look like them. By individuals, who did not understand them nor their culture. By individuals, who despised them, and, saw them as inferior. By individuals who did not have their best interests at heart. I remember when I was in school, many of my Hispanic friends, got whippings from the teacher or sent to the principal’s office for speaking Spanish while on the school property. The welfare system in America is an unjust system, because it rewards negative behavior. Any system that rewards individuals for having babies out of wedlock and allows them to receive benefits for being lazy, and, takes from a man that is working, and gives to a man that can work but won’t, is a wicked system. For example, Mary Ann went to college and acquire her four-year degree in Nursing. She got a job at a large hospital, and, she lives in a nice apartment complex. She pays $950.00 a month, for a large size one bedroom. Living one door down from Mary Ann, is Jane Doe, who has two kids, not married, but lives in a large two-bedroom apartment, paying only $81.00 a month, because the government subsidizes the rest. A large two-bedroom apartment of this size would normally cost $1250.oo. The welfare system has just undermined Mary Ann’s efforts for going to college and making something out of  herself. The welfare system in America must be cut or limited to one year. Young girls are not going to stop having babies, as long as they know that they can get on the system. It is a shame to see these healthy women on welfare, while at the same time taking care of grown men who do not want to work, and sleeping until 1:00p.m. in the day. It is a shame to see these women in stores screaming and cursing their kids out, while the grown thug is pushing the basket putting whatever groceries he wants in the cart. Welfare must be abolished in America, especially in the black community. Yes, I am very much aware, of the research which shows that there are more whites on welfare than blacks and Hispanics, but, African Americans and Hispanics, have much higher percentages, of being on welfare than whites. The black community as a whole, will never experience, true political and economic power, until it frees itself from handouts, from the government, through the social welfare state.

Bowtie you’re preaching now! I agree with you 100% no 150%. The welfare system should’ve been restructured before 1979 the year I was born. Like you said welfare destroying black families and making black people lazy. I don’t want to sound inconsiderate for the people that actually need government assistants, but the people that have been on welfare for multiple years that’s too long. I remember back in high school I had a part time job at a grocery store. Just like clock work on the first and fifteenth of every month here they come loading up two maybe three baskets full of groceries and drive off in a Mercedes or BMW. Now you have people selling use of their lonestar card on the street “If you give me $40 I’ll let you charge $50 worth of groceries on my lonestar card.” I know a woman that lives in 3 bedrooms house with 2 full bathrooms and a 2 car garage paying dam near nothing for rent. I’ll be glad when someone on Capitol Hill stand up and do something.

While Professor, I have two sides to the subject of wlefare. I believe that on one hand, that we should not abolish welfare because there are a number of people on welfare that are trying to accomplish something while on welfare. They are using welfare to help them get better within a couple of years. It may not seem that way to a great deal of people, because there are women that actual need the help because the father is not there to help. Now, on the other hand, there are people who abuse the welfare system. I personally know a few women, who are on welfare and are not trying to make a better life for themselves. These women have been on welfare for over five years, and still sit at home doing nothing. Like people say, it only takes one person to mess it up for everybody.

  3. Tanisha Shaw says:

I would agree that the welfare system should be abolished. The systems only designed to hold certain groups down. Many of the receipant of the welfare systems childrens grows up to on welfare. It is design to create more fatherless homes, laziness. It upset me when I work a fulltime job to provide for my family, and my neighbors do not work, and wears nicer clothes than I do, and than I look at their children who is not well taken care of. Some of these receipents sells the foodstamps which the state provides, and the child who they are claiming the need help for is still suffering.

  4. There are always two sides to every story. Yes I completely agree that welfare is very much abused on the other hand to many girls it is needed. One way to possibly solve a problem is for welfare to have mandatory drug testing to be approved and to maintain welfare. Im sure that will knock quit a few people out of the running. There should be a time limit as well.. welfare was designed to be a temporary helping hand, not permanent, Now i know that welfare is mainly abused but it sometimes helps in a najor way. Me for example i have full insurance coverage.. although i spend way t much money fr insurance it surprisingly did not cover pregnancy or childbirth. I got on medicaid to help me with the pregnancy and birth while still maintaioning my regular insurance. not that that is all over with im no longer on medicaid. see so there is always two sides to each story. a positive and negative.. in my casae positive but to many others negative.

Welfare in the United States has been taken for granted for a very long time. I’m sure that their food stamps. People would people try to buy cigarettes with food stamps. That made me go crazy mad. I mean here I was, a young Hispanic teenager eager to work. Excited to get a paycheck and knowing that I worked hard for my paycheck. Then I see all my deductions. Out of a $200 (or less) check, I’d get about $30 taken out. I’m not saying that everyone on welfare mistreats the system, but it’s those few people that put a bad taste in everyone else’s mouth. I remember helping one person, who had just paid for their groceries with food stamps, load their groceries in their car. They had a brand new white Toyota Land cruiser. It was the nicest car in the parking lot! It’s time to limit the time these types of people stay dependent on welfare. It’s time that these people get a job and become a productive person in society. When the program was created, the creators didn’t have this in mind. I couldn’t agree more when the Bowtie Professor says that by government handout, this undermines the hard work of all those who work hard and who make something of themselves. My first job was a cashier at a grocery store. People would come in there and just buy junk with

I agree with this 90%. I agree with this because welfare is a big part of this country. I find it unfair that there is people working there butts off out there just so they can barely survive. Then there is a big part of the black american grooup who are basically just taking advantages of all this free money or place to stay or free food. They are just taking and taking and taking. When they could actually be working for a living instead of living off of our taxes that we pay.I do also think that there is people out there who need it and yes it should be offered to them but at a extent. To many people are taking advantage of the system which is bad. Because it will just lead our future generations to do the same and basically be at home lazy with nothing to do. There is people out there who need the help but dont get it. So why should people who dont need it why should they get it. Or welfare should also be offered as a temporary solution. While they get back on there feet.

  7. Robert snowton says:

I can’t agree with this article more , the welfare system in America is screwed up the point I loved most in this article was the point about the woman living in a one bedroom house and the woman living in the two bedroom house. It’s completely not fair that the girl that’s working hard and has a degree is doing what she has to do and handling her business but the other lady is just sitting home all day and cashing her check at the end of the month . African americans these days need motivation and welfare is not the answer .

  8. arthur brooks says:

I agree with your paragraph. its a shame how black communities are ignorante to the affects of welfare. blacks are becoing more and more lazy and work ethic is leaving out the door. At the same time america how can you blame a person for milking the cow if you keep producing the resource. you here go to school and get a good paying job, but they reward people for having 6 kids and a sad story about life. this really didnt affect me until i starting working and they started taking out taxes for people that just sit at home and collect on the first and 15. Im a colege student with a job and struggling and still cant get help from the gov without a catch to it.i just hope people wake up and cut all this assistance out. make people work for what they need and want educate people so they dont have 5 kids by three different people make the world a better place dont undermind it. I totally agree with you. It is sad to see things like that happening around us. Especially with the foodstamps. I know, I have applied for benefits and the only wanted to give me $85 for me and my daughter. But another lady come in and gets $900/month for her two kids and is dressed in name brand from head to toe. She dont have no job but she can get all these nice clothes, I wanna know how is that possible? When I go to school and work but still I can’t get the good benefits she gets for doing what should be done as a mother. This is a crazy world. I agree with you Profeesor Juhree that they should get rid of it.
