Professors: Unattractive People
If one were to walk through any college or university door, he or she would probably notice, that as a whole, professors are unattractive people. It really does not matter whether it is a small college, or large one. It does not matter, whether it is a two-year community college, or a four-year institution, professors will either be unattractive or old, or both. Now, quite naturally, there are always exceptions to the rule, however, if twenty professors were to knock at your front door, eighteen, would either be unattractive or old, the other two will look halfway decent. This is why a lot of professors, go and get several degrees. They acquire a great deal of education, to compensate for not having the looks, and, many of them hide behind the shield of intellectualism. Most of the male professors, are usually either fat, or have the looks of a nerd, and they look goofy. The majority of the female professors, are excessive overweight, old, and they look rough, and just like the male professors, they too, acquire several degrees to compensate for not having the looks. When I was at Ohio State University, the joke was that “pretty girls did not have to go to graduate school”. Why ? It is very simple, looks still play a major part in our society. Good looking people, still have an edge over those who are not so good looking. Sometimes, I will hear some of my colleagues, telling students that they will get jobs, just based on their qualifications, which is really not true. The way a person looks also plays a major role, in determining whether or not he or she will get the job. Nevertheless, the professorship as a whole, is an area, where the unattractive dwell. In others words, if you happen to be a very attractive individual, especially, a woman, it would be very difficult for you to acquire a professorship, because most of the folks on your hiring committee, are usually going to be unattractive, and woe to you, if you are a very attractive woman, and, the vast majority of members on your committee, are women, you will not have a fair chance, of getting the job, because most of these women will envy you, and, they will do all they can, to block you from getting the position. I have taught at five different institutions of higher learning, and, I have sat on so many committees, where this actually happened. Again, there is always a few exceptions. Now if you think that I am lying or joking, just go to the nearest college, from where you live, and, knock on the office doors of some of these professors, and see want someone unattractive or old open it up. If you are a professor, and, happen to be reading this, don’t get mad with me because you are ugly. Oh yes, I am very much aware, that people come to college to learn, and, not to look at, how attractive or unattractive professors are, and their main objective, is to acquire an education, but, it still does not negate the fact that, professors as a whole, (including myself) are unattractive people.

Now Professor what makes a Professor unattractive is the nastiness attitude not a person’s looks. Maybe professor should try to smile, because a smile makes anyone look attractive. I know a professor will tell me, Illa you just don’t know what I go through with these college students, and then the whole spill about their life, whatever! Professors should dress professional, now that is a big throw off when I can walk into my room and not tell the difference between a student or a professor. Professor should come into the classroom looking like professionals not like a hooka on the street or a man that just came out of boxing exercises. A professor should smell good, and have some breath mints on him or her so while he or she is talking the student won’t get sea sick. Some people believe that people find them unattractive because of their looks, but it is not about looks it is a whole big thing on the personality of a person. Some professors look like bull dogs, with a double face, because of their nasty frowns. So I encourage all professors to put a smile on your face, and beautify yourselves, because you worked to hard to get your degrees and that is something to smile about.

I read this article, and at first it mad me laugh!!! Then as I kept reading, it educated me on some things. I was not aware that my looks would hold a great boundary for me. I myself consider myself an attractive female. I always thought it was the other way around “If you look and play the part, you surely will get the part”
I work at a Middle School, and I always instill in my young female students, that it’s not how you look, but what you have inside of your big brain that will matter. But I know deep down insid, that’s not all true. Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know.
I instill in my own children 20yrs old son at Prairie View College, and 18yr old daughter in the Navy, that looks are EVERYTHING!!!! They are both attractive…….After reading this, it just given me a whole didn’t perspective on myself…..I always thought if you were an attractive person, you have the advantage, but this is not the case…
And yes, I have walked around the campus here at Eastfield College, and there are some UGLY Professors (ha-ha)
I totally agree with this passage. Even though there is its exceptions, your look does matter. Plain and simple. Depending on the position you are applying for, if you don’t get a call back from a job you thought you met the standards for look at yourself in the mirror and you might have an answer. I remember when i got my first job i was so exited about because i had no experienced in the job and i had been offered a position that would take senority to get. I was so happy and tried my best but little did i know that it wasn’t my skills nor my potential, it was my looks. I felt awful and i felt like i didn’t really deserve that position even though i would do everything it was required of me. I finally understood why the older ladies hated my gutts. They had been wanting my position for a while and i just came in and took it. They made my life miserable to the day i went away to college. Things have not changed though, it happened again at my old job with no food serving experience, the minimum requirements for that position was two-years of experience and i had none. Most of the proffesors are unattractive like it says, but they already lived there life and had there fun. With that said i am thinking about maybe becoming a spanish teacher one day. I have met very good looking proffessors before. Espeacially teachers through out my whole education. People in general should care how they look, if you think that there is nothing you can do to “fix” yourself just be positive and know that not all places are like that. We need nerds in this world!
You are right most of the professors in college are unatractive and most of them are old. But I believe that this is because they spend so much year of their lives studying and getting their degrees that now they might be so tired that they don’t have time to dress properly. Or most of them are merried already and they have to take care of the house and then go to work or viseverse. But I also believe that no one is uglu. Is just that sometimes we need time to fix ourselves a litle bit. Because this is all a person needs have time to make up or get a good hair cut to look pretty. Because hair is one of the most important things that make a person look different.
Its true! Professors should smile more and they won’t look as bad. But yea……some of them are pretty ugly. It doesn’t matter much to me if you smile and explain the subject well and aren’t a complete stuffed shirt about what you’re teaching. Its fine with me. I don’t like the professors who talk like “theses kids should already know this.” There’s no room for questions and if you don’t smile and look mean, no one will ask them anyway. Professors may be ugly but some are intimidating. I have a professor who, if you ask a question, tears you up in front of the whole class. Its not so much the ugly as the attidtude. I agree with ILLA
I agree with your article on how professor can be unattractive. They may be unattractive because they may spend many of their times studying instead of worrying about their physical apperance. Honestly i would not care if the professor was ugly or not as long as they are giving me the understanding of what i need to know in that class. i would not care about their physical apperence.
What makes a person atractive is up to that person and their attitude. We live in a competative world. Yah, eveyone should look attractive and can make themselves atractive. I know some “bigger sized” people who are beautiful, its all about how you approch people. In school or college the teachers should look like teachers, not some one walking in the GYM or from the street, well in that matter it applies to the students too.No student should be dragging their pants in the hall way. I agree in this era we all are too much in to the looks, but people can be attractive with their positive attitude as well. A teacher walking in the class room with a smile can make a huge difference. Yes looks does matter!!!
You know what Dr. Jurhee, I have to agree with most of what you stated in this short essay. It is true; most of my professors are a little unattractive, and some just have unattractive personalities, and begin to look ugly to their students. However, I have had a couple of attractive professors. So far I have had three attractive professors during my 3 semesters at Eastfield; they were cool too. Strangely enough, they were all women, and they are very pretty. I think it might have something to do with where a person is from too. Out of those three professors, two of them are from New Orleans and one is not from New Orleans, but she is not from Texas either. I don’t remember where she is from. My point being, that it is not always so much a person’s looks that gets them where they desire to be, but it is the look of their personality that draws their students, and people in general, to them.
professors shouldl really be more friendly towards everyone or at least to the students who are trying to learn… But since it has taken them for ever to earn their degrees they are so boring and have no time to spend have a good time. Some professors should really change their looks!!!
I agree with the Professor 100%! Although some teachers are quite ugly their attitude makes them look a whole lot better or a whole lot worst. Its true about job interviews as well, not only do they look at your beauty they look at your youth and your capability to take their job. I experienced it first hand. Being the youngest employee I have to take the stares, the whispers, the comments, and the attitude. Because I am the youngest, everyone thinks they can tell me what to do and how to do it. In my opinion a pretty face will get the steak and an ugly face will get the boot!
Professor,
You are straight forward! It’s true that nowadays, professors aren’t quit good looking. I also agree with you that if a women is very attractive and is trying to get a position, some people “Haters” are going to try and do whatever they can so that very attractive women doesn’t get the position. It’s unfair, and it’s no ones fault that he/she is unattractive. It’s like why do some individuals have to hate on attractive people? Any who, overall , I do agree with you on these topics.
Yeah most professors are not good looking or pretty. Altough there are some who have good look, but there are very few. About half of the professors who are ugly are really bitter professors. They have no sense of life or humor in them, and that is a bad thing. The other half are ugly, but with a good sense of humor. I agree with the Bowtie Professor.
Class Tu/Thur 11:00
Now this is intersting. I am not sure I agree totally (maybe because I would like to be a profesor some day). I do not think that they are so much unattrative as high and mighty. As you said in class, in the upper schools you don’t want to argue with your proffessor. This is because with all the letters behind their name they think they are right no matter what. They assume they are smart and you are not. This behavior is the most unattrative trait.
Class mon and wed at 12:30
I agree that almost all professors are not very attractive. I can count on one hand how many professors are decently good looking. At Eastfield there are not many professors that have the looks. This does make me want to go to random colleges and see if the professor that opens that opens the door is ugly. My mom has always told me that looks are not the most important thing in situations such as a job interview but I myself believe it plays a great part in getting a job. The part about beig pretty can be a downfall If u are trying to get a teaching position was hilarious.
I agree that many of the professors are old, ugly, unattractive, nerdy, etc., but if an attractive woman was to apply for an educational job, the chances of not getting hired don’t seem like it would mainly be because of her looks, but perhaps she doesn’t have the educational background the panel was searching for. It is not always about looks, but they do play a strong role in everything. Also, it doesn’t really matter what the professor looks like. If they have the brains, knowledge, and patience to teach, let them teach regardless of their face, body, etc.
I agree that many professors are not very attractive. Maybe its because they worked all their lives and really didnt care about there apperances. But then again there are a handful of professors that you might come across that are pretty decent looking. Even if a professor is attractive or none attractive they should be able to teach anywhere without getting put down about there looks.
I agree!!! I have seen so many professors at Eastfield that walk around the halls looking mad!! Professors need to cheer up! What do they frown about? They have their degrees! Thery need to enjoy us as we are trying to succeed in life. Working full time and going to school is not easy and professors need to be understan that!!
***I had a professor this semester that I had to drop her class for that same reason!!! Old school professor BIG-TIME!!! LOL
I definately agree with this passage, because no matter how much people don’t want to admit it, looks do matter. I know this for a fact because my first semester here, my first period teacher was fairly old and the ladies wouldn’t be interested in attending class and would often skip, but my math teacher was very young and pretty and all the men attended on a regular basis. You don’t notice these things until you take a step back and observe it, but it is true. Also, when you’re getting a job, it applies there too. My male friend and I applied to the same restaurant one time, and we both had the exact same amount of experience, yet I got hired and he didnt. I dont think its fair to the professors but people think what they want to think.
definately agree with this, because no matter how much people don’t want to admit it, looks do matter it shows how shallow as a people we are. I know this for a fact because when i think about my semesters here, my teacher was fairly old and kinda flamboint and the ladies wouldn’t be interested in attending class and would skip, but my english teacher was very young and athletic built guy all the ladies attended on a regular basis. You don’t notice these things till somebody brings it to your attention. thanks again proffesor!!!
Yes, it’s true! Looks do matter. The first impression is what most people will take from you for a long time. Although its’ ones personality that should be most important. Now I don’t think all professors are unattractive, I’m sure at least one-third of them are attractive, both female and male. I always thought “good looks” would guarantee one a job, but after reading this I realized and agreed that many times it disqualifies you, especially with the envious and judgmental us women can be!
I feel rude to agree with this passage but, you do have a point Professor! I’ve seen most professors at my school and only a few have I thought to myself were good looking. But that doesn’t take away their great ability to teach and educate others. It’s hard to get a good job anywhere period. It’s sad when the hot guy or girl gets it because of just their looks but it’s so true, that’s the main reason why they get the job. Some are blessed with beauty and others are blessed with intellect and few get both. If it was up to me, I would take intellect anyday!
I do agree that your looks is the first things you see, but you should also have a good personality. I know alot of people who seem attractive to me but have a nasty attittude. Which makes me want to avoid them. I think if you have alot of charisma and get along with people great, then all that can make up for the looks if you dont have them. If you do have looks well thats even better and life would be like a breeze.
I think that what this aticle is saying is true, a lot of the times people get judged or get picke first or last based on their looks. First expressions matter a lot specially when you are going to an interview or a meeting they look at how you present your self, how you look if you dressed nice or bad. Employers look at the way people look a lot to decide if they are going to hire you or not, and also to decide that if they do hire you that you are going to look presentable on the job. Also when you are presenting in your speech class, you are getting graded in many things but one of them is on how you look, if you dressed appropriate for the presentation or not, I would know because I have speech and the teachers grade is partialy on how one looks. I also agree that the professors at colleges are unattractive and there are some exceptions to some professors but most of them are unattractive and I know it harsh but its the truth. If people think that, that is the only reason professors become professor that is not true they have other reasons like they like teaching it is just a misfortune that they are unattractive and that they fit the categorie that we are speaking about. To end my comment I believe that people do get judged on looks and I think its unfair, sometimes good looks are good for people but sometimes its bad so I think that people should stop electing people for certain things based on looks.
I do agree with you professor, looks definitely make a difference. Although we shouldn’t make this a priority as a society we do and I know because I have experience it. Right before I graduated I applied for a position at Countrywide home loans for HELOC, Home purchases and Line of Credits, I thought I would give a chance although I had no experience what so ever or clue of what to do, well turns out I got the job and I can assure you it wasn’t my interview because I went blank. The majority of the people working there were probably on their mid 20’s me barely 18. I think is not fair to the people how have the knowledge and yet we go for looks not experience. Personally I believe every single person is beautiful, of course a little help won’t hurt by trying to look better and fixing ourselves, dressing appropriately and smelling good! … I think if professor would dress more professional and fix their appearance they would look great and of course “smile”.
I fully agree with this. The majority of my professors are male and I will admit that they are either nerdy or goofy, and some may even be both. For some reason I feel that its purposely done to have ugly professors because if there were to good looking professors, there may be some students that would pay more attention to how to the professor looks than to what’s coming out of his or her mouth.
I do agree with you professor, your appearance does determine how you feel about yourself in the inside and treating people. In my days of working, I have work with all races, but a certain young lady did’nt a job because her skin was lighter than the interviewer. I believe that some people have missed out on opportunities because people are judging then from the outside.
i think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Someone might be attractive on the outside but rotten on the inside. As far as professors go most of the ones I’ve met have been older and since I take night classes they are usually crabby and tired. There has been the exception to the rule, last semester I had one of the best math teachers ever and at first she didnt seem too nice and was not outgoing or funny at all, but this teacher had a heart of gold and really went out of her way to help her students. But if we are talking about looks she lacked in that field but her inner beauty outshone whatever was on the outside.
It’s true that a lot of the professors are not very good looking and that they may hide behind their degrees, but should we look upon them this way? I speak from personal experience. At my job we have went through a lot of secretaries that were nice looking, but know we have one that is great. She may not be pretty on the eyes, but she gets the job done. That’s why I can say I don’t care what you look like if your good at your job than that’s all that matters. In certain areas looks do play a big part. If you’re a waitress at place, men don’t want an ugly waitress. No one wants to see an ugly person in certain advertisements. I have also noticed that in sales there are a lot of nice looking ladies. It doesn’t have to be the work place that women feel threatened about nice looking ladies; it is in everyday life and especially in older ladies.
Everybody has their opinions and true beauty is in the eye of a beholder. I think main thing is if a person has nothing good to say then do not say anything.
I am a strong advocate on “you are only as ugly as you appear to be”, but sometimes ugly can run deep. I was in WDC over the weekend and while spending time in one of many museums, I had the time to really relax, set back and exam the beauty and ugly not just in professors, but “normal” individuals also. Professors aren’t the only ugly people walking around; there are a lot of unattractive, scary and even down right repulsive looking people walking the earth. There is one thing you are right about, these people were very knowledgeable; whether it pertained to the scholar, art enthusiasts or just common-sense people. This just goes to show ugly people get out just as much as attractive people. Take dating for instance; when one judges a book by its cover and never takes the time to even browse what is within, the whole basis of the relationship is in vain. Whereas again, with some refocusing and willingness to recognize and search for the most important qualities for a sustaining and lasting relationship, you might just be able to take the high road and find true love. After all, more important than the face and body; ugly people know that looks will diminish with time…so look out pretty people, your days are numbered! Funny enough, it could just be their misguided vanity and falsehood that will now lead them to a new focus, one which will be based on a true connection of the heart and mind, and not just a pretty face!
Yes i agree professors are not that attractive but like the bowtie professor says people go to college to get an education not to judge the way people look.At least that’s my point of view i could careless the way my teacher looks as long as i get my degree i will be happy.
I agree in many of the points that were made, attractive people do have many advantages over unattractive people. But on the other hand, like stated attractive people have difficulties to acquire a professorship. Attractive people are expected to not be smart and be lazy, and if otherwise, attractive people constantly face problems that include envy and jealousy. Many of the time the really attractive people don’t want to have special advantages, and just want to be judged by their intelligences and ways of being. Attractive people didn’t ask to be attractive just like nerd never asked to be smart. Everyone is equal and an unattractive person should be judged the same as an attractive person.
Unfortunately, this is very true most professors are somewhat unattractive. Some people say that “looks aren’t everything” yeah, true. But, come on we all know it helps to be good looking. On the other hand who cares what your professor looks like your there to learn not to be his or her fashion police. But, once again i do agree professors are funny looking(ugly).
Well, I do have to agree with you, most professors now days are not the most attractive poeple, but no one cares. Many poeple would mucg rather have a professor that is not good looking and knows what he is teaching then a hot one who does not teach us anything.
This article was extremely funny and enlightning. I have noticed that a lot of the professors i have had are unattractive. It makes it easier for us as students to pay attention to the lesson instead of daydreaming about screwing your teacher. This is probably implemented to keep the sexual harassment cases down. Well i guess not since you always hear about students sleeping with their professors. These educators probably use their power to pass in order to get some young stuff since most of the time they are old and cruddy.
To follow a career in education the rule is to be ugly. This might be because to be a teacher of any level it is necessary that the individual is devoted to the job. Ugly people don’t have distractions as in significant other that take up there time because they are so bad looking. Ever since high school one can distinguish the future education majors. Look for the fat ugly and nerdy group remember them one day they teach your kids. However there are some unusual cases were the prom queen, hottest girl in class becomes a teacher. I believe looks also help them get were there but hey who blames the pretty for there gift and the ugly for there curse?
I believe that everybody has there own pros and cons. Not all unaffractive people get multiple degrees, every person deals with there probelms in there own way.
Some do go the path of achieving a vast amount of knowledge, but other take other paths. Plus without some unaffractive people to collect degrees we wouldn’t have any professors or teachers to pass the knowledge to the next generation.
So I don’t believe being unaffractive is a bad trait, just the way the American society views it is in my opinion a “bad trait” that I would like changed in my life time. I doubt it tho.
Class Monday and Wednesday 7:05 to 8:25 I agree with this passage on unattracter proferrors butI am sure they are there for a job and not for looks. As long as they are teaching and hepl students with their education they are ok im my sight. Beauty is only skin deep.
I would say i’d have to agree with you professor, most of the professors I have come across are in fact unattractive. However, there is anyways some exceptions to the rule because in high school I had several female teachers that I thought were attractive but I agree that the majiority of college professors are unattractive. I don’t know why but female teachers in high school are way more attractive than any female college professor. but, I believe that even if a professor is unattractive then knowldge of the subject they teach and (hopefully) their personality can make up for it.
This is a funny, but mostly true, piece of writing, professor. After i finished reading this, I immedietly started to think of how professors at Eastfield look like. It’s true! Like you said, there are exceptions to this. For the older professors here at Eastfield, I wonder how they looked in their prime. A lot of professors had careers before they decided to teach. Maybe, just maybe, old professors feel more comfortable taking control of a classroom rather than taking control of a business office, for example. Therefore, their looks might not bother them as much as it would in business. There is nothing wrong with a person that is intellectually beautiful rather than physically beautiful. They both have their ups and downs. If one has both, then he/she gots it made.
I do agree and I don’t agree! If that is the case then that really isn’t fair to the good looking teachers who actually wanna help kids learn. The untracctive teacher may be less atractive but atleast they wanna help you learn! Some good looking teachers do wanna help, or some just get so wrapped on there looks to where it wouldn’t matter! Looks do play a major role in everything you do in life wheather at work, school,on job interview… I do belive that the better you carry yourself the more likely you are to get the job unlike if someone came in dressing like a slob!
This article may be right that many professors try to accumulate many degrees as possible to compensate for their looks, although it is funny and unfair. To me, unattractive people are not defined or based on their looks but based on their actions. That may sound old fashioned. For example, there is a pretty person that flies through college and gets a job. When we come to meet this pretty person, we come to see that this person is not pretty from the inside but rude and arrogant. I have met the sweet professors and rude professors and the appearance did not matter at all. It is just the way that they carry themselves that matter.
AHHAHA!!!! wow…. i have walked around the college and see that you are correct.. i think they just are old.. .. for example.. at my high school we have a lot of new teachers and they look good!!!!! Maybe.. just professors don’t.. but like anything in life they are alwaya exceptions. I have some old good looking, old unatractive, young unatractive, adn young hot teachers. I guess it is just opinion based to be polite. Bow tie professor you are hillarious.
I agree with that most professors are unatractive and maybe since they have worked hard their whole lives they did not have the time to worry about their appearance. Most of them still have to do work outside of the classroom to keep up with new developments in their field that they should teach and with going to meetings among other things probably does not leave them with much time for them do do things for thier apperance like going to the gym. However, I think professors should dress like professors and I believe that most professors dont dress like they should. To me dressing appropriatly is part of maintaining your appearance. But at the end of the day we are there to learn from professors and not judge their beauty and professors are solely there to teach us not to win a beauty contest. As far as the professors on commitees evaluating cantidates for professor positions and factoring the cantidates looks into their evaluation is wrong. As educated people these professors should know better than to let their emotions make their decisions for them especially when it comes to things like bringing in new talent. It seems idiotic not to hire someone that is well qualified because you are jealous of their looks.
I absolutely agree with this. Unfortunately, looks still play such an important role in our society. As much as we may try to tell ourselves and others that looks don’t matter, they most certainly do! I have always been told that pretty people get better paying jobs and i now believe this to be true. I don’t think that teachers are as much unattractive as they imagine themselves to be. I believe that they see no use in getting pretty or caring about how they look to teach to a bunch of wild kids.
Well, I never thought about the attractiveness of college professors before but I do have to agree with you about attractive people having more advantages than unattractive people. I still believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
This is a funny topic but i think most professors really don’t get many degrees to compensate for their looks on purpose. There is always an exception for everything, including this, but sometimes it could just be coincidence. A solution could be that professors spend their time enhancing their knowledge and don’t leave any time to enhance their looks. But as one of the points made in the article said, “I will get the position for my qualifications” is wrong, then why did the professor get the position in the first place? Did the looks play any part in getting the position or did the qualifications do the trick? I’m not saying that my professors are good looking, by any means, but it’s tough to have compassion for all of them.
GOVT 2301 11-12:30
Why are these other people on here talking about if the professors smiled more or would be more friendly they would be more attractive. We are not talking about peoples personalities, we are talking about how phsyically attractive they are. I do not want to hear about how a great personality makes someone attractive. Thats far from the truth. Professors as a whole are fairly unattractive. Most have great personalities once you get to know them, but that does not mean i would try to get to know them on any phsyical level. One of my best guy friends has a wonderful personality, but is not the most attractive male. He has a heart of gold, very caring and respectful. I have tried to look past that and go on a date with him, but when it comes to any phsyical contact I just can not bare the thought.
I honestly could care less if a professor is unattractive. I only care if they are delivering information to where i can undestand it. Eventhough attractive professors give students something to lokk foward to when they coe to class. I had a very attractive professor and i looked foward to being in his class every day. I never missed class, nor i was i ever late to his class.
Yes it is true that many professors are not very attractive but we cant blame them because they decided to spend their time getting a degree rather than worrying about their looks. Now it wouldnt hurt if professors fixed themselves up every once in a while but why should looks matter in school whenever you are there to learn. We shouldnt focus on the fact that, although it may be true, the majority of professors are unattractive but rather focus on their intellegence and their ability to teach the students.
