Professors: Unattractive People

If one were to walk through any college or university door, he or she would probably notice, that as a whole, professors are unattractive people. It really does not matter whether it is a small college, or large one. It does not matter, whether it is a two-year community college, or a four-year institution, professors will either be unattractive or old, or both. Now, quite naturally, there are always exceptions to the rule, however, if twenty professors were to knock at your front door, eighteen, would either be unattractive or old, the other two will look halfway decent. This is why a lot of professors, go and get several degrees. They acquire a great deal of education, to compensate for not having the looks, and, many of them hide behind the shield of intellectualism. Most of the male professors, are usually either fat, or have the looks of a nerd, and they look goofy. The majority of the female professors, are excessive overweight, old, and they look rough, and just like the male professors, they too, acquire several degrees to compensate for not having the looks. When I was at Ohio State University, the joke was that “pretty girls did not have to go to graduate school”. Why ? It is very simple, looks still play a major part in our society. Good looking people, still have an edge over those who are not so good looking. Sometimes, I will hear some of my colleagues, telling students that they will get  jobs, just based on their qualifications, which is really not true. The way a person looks also plays a major role, in determining whether or not he or she will get the job. Nevertheless, the professorship as a whole, is an area, where the unattractive dwell. In others words, if you happen to be a very attractive individual, especially, a woman, it would be very difficult for you to acquire a professorship, because most of the folks on your hiring committee, are usually going to be unattractive, and woe to you, if you are a very attractive woman, and, the vast majority of  members on your committee, are women, you will not have a fair chance, of getting the job, because most of these women will envy you, and, they will do all they can, to block you from getting the position. I have taught at five different institutions of higher learning, and, I have sat on so many committees, where this actually happened. Again, there is always a few exceptions. Now if  you think that I am lying or joking, just go to the nearest college, from where you live, and, knock on the office doors of some of these professors, and see want someone unattractive or old open it up. If you are a professor, and, happen to be reading this, don’t get mad with me because you are ugly. Oh yes, I am very much aware, that people come to college to learn, and, not to look at, how attractive or unattractive professors are, and their main objective, is to acquire an education, but, it still does not negate the fact that, professors as a whole, (including myself) are unattractive people.

  1. The title says it all, as halarious as it sound, professors are unattractive people. With some exceptions,of coure, but in the most part is true. However, i believe there is a couple of reasons why we feel this way. First of all, I find it kind of hard for a person twice my age to be attractive and considering that most college students are between the ages of 18 and 26 this is very important to point out. Second of all, not only are some professors ugly physically but also their attide stinks, some professors are rude, obnoxious, and completer jerks. Finally, who would like someone that is constaltly assigning homework to us and giving us test and quizes that we might or might not want to do, I know i would’nt but the decision is yours I agree with the Bowtie professor, professors are unattractive people..

  2. yes this is very common. most focus on learning an not of their appearance. true its not a fashion show but i’m talking health here. most professors stretch there mind and not there bodies. yes it is easier to pay attention if the female teacher is less distracting but that doesn’t mean their health has to suffer to from neglect.

Professor yecats you just make me laugh! You have a point though. Most of the professor i have had in my past classes look like they fell down an ugly tree and hit every branch on their way down. No joke.
I am trying to be a teacher but i dont wanna fall down that tree nor gain 100 pounds.
Im hoping theres an exceptions like ive seen here and there. This is true but not right, other jobs expect you to look good.

  4. Oscar Angulo says:

I have most definitely seen this not only in my classes but in the work force in my college.

As a financial aid adviser, I worked within a large female population both attractive and unattractive. My manager, the student service coordinator, had a burn accident and thus was not a very pleasant person to look at. The student loan coordinator was one of my youngest and attractive female co-workers.
When a student came in, they would head towards the loan coordinator first and begin to bombard her with questions that she does not know the answer to. She would then direct them to my manager who was very knowledgeable about the subject but they take a good look at her and come back saying, “Are you sure you can’t help me?”

  5. Azalea Salazar says:

I want to be a teacher when I graduate and I hope I’m considered as unattractive. I have noticed that in grade school many of the teachers are youthful, attractive, and nice, caring individuals. In middle school the teachers are alright but a little on edge. In high school they are usually grumpy older women or funny older coaches. BUT in college there are not many if any nice, caring, attractive professors. It makes sense because in each of these different fields it takes a little bit more time and discipline to teach the higher grade levels.

    P.S. I want to teach second grade…

  6. Thomas Mathew says:

I dont know if it is true with the teaching profession, but i have noticed this when it comes to jobs that especially deal with people. I am after all a third person so therefore have no proof or evidence to back up any of my statements and are therefore opinions. I believe that professors are not just ugly people in general but rather that they are just men and women that have gone through years of school and is therefore just old. Americans have said to have the highest when it comes to judging how people looks. So these professors might just be older citizens whose looks have deteriorated over time. As for other jobs, I agree completely. You will notice that many of the people that hold jobs higher up in the ladder tend to be better looking and bigger.

  7. Betty Boban says:

I completely agree that the vast majority of professors are ugly, and somewhat overweight. However I believe that if one is ugly they should still be considered for the job in the field they are looking for whether it be education or business. Though looks are one of the criteria’s that employers look at it should not have the emphasis it has in the society today. I realize that my opinion may differ from others and that it will not cause employers to change the way they decide on a new employee if they focus on looks. I just wanted to say that one should look include there qualities and capabilities in the mix and hold them at higher standard because after all they are the brains behind a corporation.

  8. Ibn Thompson says:

True, some professors may not LOOK all that nice, but then again, a professor’s main purpose is to teach his or her students. A professor shouldn’t have to worry about his or her students complaining about his or her looks. A professor SHOULD have to worry about teaching his students.

  9. Eduardo Maldonado says:

woe is the role beauty must play in our society. Its a sad thing to see when your surrounded by a group of people that thrive off of self gratification and narcissism. But it is true! Ill pay a lot more attention in my classes if my teacher is attractive rather than having an old but wise elderly woman lecture for two or more hours about the Pythagorean theorem, not because i admire the attractive woman’s looks but because more often than not, teachers that look good feel good and if you feel good you teach well. This excludes the rare group of people that love what they do and teach with a certain passion that spreads through out the entire class room. but if that were the case then their looks should have nothing to do with obtaining the position that is wanted, alas sadly it does.

  10. Luis Martinez says:

I hear you professor. I remember you telling us this in one of our lectures. So i started doing a little researcher of my own and tried to see if what you said was correct. I must admit and say that yes sir you are correct! & like you said there are those few exceptions. Off course doing this was a bit difficult because in not the type of person to be judging people on how they look or dress. I only judge on they way they behave towards me. I will agree and i guess quote Ibn Thompson - “a professor’s main purpose is to teach his or her students” they are not there to look pretty for us. We should not apreciate a teacher of professor on their look we should apreciate them for what they do everyday, they teach us. Some by the lecture on a subject and some by sharing stories. ive had those good and bad teachers…. those exciting and boring teacher but at the end ones has to look back and see what changed in ones self… not how sexy or cute or ugly the teacher looked.
Unfortunately that’s how America is all about “the looks”.
