The Ongoing Seed Of Racism In America
One good operational definition of Racism, would be the belief, that a particular race, especially one’s own, is superior to other races, and, thus, causes those who adhere, to such a belief, to practice discrimination against those, of a different racial or cultural background. The seed of racism was planted in the U.S. , from the very beginning, as this country developed as a nation, and, this is what President Obama is experiencing with the Republican Party. Many individuals in the Republican Party, along with a few Southern Conservative Democrats, in both Houses of Congress, shout for limited government, when they don’t practice what they preach. They say “limited government and big business”, while at the same time receiving tax breaks, from the same government, who they want to be small and limited. Did corporate America say limited government, when they asked for a bailout? How about Wall street? Didn’t they also ask for a bailout ? But, what about limited and small government? The American taxpayer, bailed these corporate giants out of their mess, including Wall-street, and, I did not notice any strong opposition from the Republican Party. But when it comes to a public option for health care, which would benefit the poor or common man, they are strongly opposed to it, because, many of these Republicans, along with a few Conservative Democrats, are in the back pockets of these powerful insurance companies, and, there is a great deal of simplistic research to back this up. Also, racism is playing a major role, in the Republican Party, under the disguise of “Conservatism”. Truly, one can be a conservative, and not be a racist, but, I do not think this is the case, with many members of the G.O.P. , and, this also goes for all the Tea Parties, that we are constantly having across the United States. The fact that a Black man is the President of the United States, has blown the minds of many groups and individuals, not only in the U.S., but, others around the world, as well. It is something deep, to mediate upon. An African American male has moved from the slave ship, to the White House, but, this it is not unusual, because blacks are usually, the first the ones to break the color-line, and, then other minority groups follow. This is why I find it very strange, when other ethnic and other minority groups, have the nerve or audacity, to think they are better than African Americans. They want to benefit from the struggle of the African American, and, many of them have, but, when it comes down to it, nobody wants to be the so-called, “nigger”. If one thinks that racism, no longer exist, within the United States, the Obama presidency, probably has changed his or her mind, because his presidency has brought out the true colors of a lot of individuals across this nation, from the Republican Party, to radio and television talk show hosts, from political analysts to news commentators, angry individuals and groups, have allowed their racism, to surface from the deep pit bottom of their souls. Such individuals, as Bill O’ Relly, Glenn Beck, Shawn Hannity, and Rush Libaugh, just to name a few, are pushing a lot of propaganda, which could lead to a great deal of racial animosty and chaos, in the U.S. , among different individuals and groups. What individuals such as Bill O’ Relly, Glenn Beck, Rush Libaugh, and, Shawn Hannity, must understand, and that is, African Americans are no longer concerned about what white folks think about them, as was the case with their forefathers. America, and the world as a whole, has changed, and, still is changing right before our eyes, and, those who have been traditionally in power, can no longer mistreat people of color, like they use to, back in the so-called, “good old days”. So, I say to all the Glenn Becks, and all the Rush Libaughs, in American, ” a black man, by the name of Barack Obama, is the President of the United States. Get over it and, move on with your lives. Yes, I know that it hurts many of you, to see a black man, as the leader, of, one of the most powerful nations on earth, and, I know why you are angry and hurt. It is very simple, it strikes down any notion of white supremacy”.

Professor,
I attend your MW Gov’t class at 5:35 PM. I agree that there must be some amount of race based bias inherent in the white elite, but I am hard pressed to find or hear the support of it. It is perhaps because I am also white, or perhaps because the many loud voices of the “old guard” are far too clever in hiding their racist ideas.
Racism is a tough card to pull in our PC society. I would very much like to stamp out that kind of thinking in myself and others, but it is difficult to catch the sentiment when it is hiding behind other issues like Affirmitive Action and Welfare statistics.

Prof Juhree I agree with you one hundred percent. I am almost certain that when many of the Republicans got word that Barack Obama was running for president, they took it as a joke. But litte did they know that the day would come where we would see our first African-American president. I think that they belived that this time would come, but I don’t think they realized that it would come this quick. It seems like they feel they have been robbed from their roles as leaders of one of the most powerful nations in the worlds. Like something they thought would never be taken away from them has been stolen. But for many people in the United States this moment has long been overdue. Even without the election of Obama it was still clearly seen that there was still racism in the present. It is sad to see and acknowledge that fact but it is inevitable.

“Racismo” like we latinos called it, always will be present. no mater if you are rich or poor. People are are so cruel now days. They either makes fun of your color or they make fun of the way you talk. Where is the respect?
Class: MWT 8oclock.
I believe that if The Republican Party is so childish that they would sink so low to have racist feelings or actions toward Obama then they do not have the right to be in any kind of politcal party. Racism is not apart of the political responsibilities a politition is precribed to. I think all who are still stuck in the times of racism need to grow up, and look at their surroundings. Nothing is going to change.
I attend 5:35 class. I agree that people were surprised an African American finally became president. I do not feel racist nor do I agree with those who do! As a matter of fact, I like my new president! Because of the wonderful program for mom’s to return to school, I am able to attend college to continue pursuing a bachelor’s degree to become a teacher! I am following my lifelong dream because of what an African American is doing for this country. We finally have a president who has everyone in mind that is struggling financially and economically. I want a better life for me and my son. I am a single mom and this would not be possible without the new programs being offered. I am also unemployed and Obama has that covered too, encouraging education without affecting benefits and extending unemployment in some cases. People need to stop seeing color and start looking at what is actually being accomplished for the poor and struggling individuals in our country. These programs will make people’s lives better and a stronger and more educated society. I am proud of our new president and look forward to seeing more good things accomplished in our country’s future!
Racism exists everywhere around the world. Regardless of what race you’re in, there are racist people in your race as well. Not one race in this world can make the statetement that racism doesn’t exist in their race because that is not true. There’s the black person blaming it on “the white man” for not progressing in life. There’s the hispanic person considering black people as an inferior race; and of course the one everyone loves to point out “the white man believing he’s better than all other races.” I am Mexican American, born and raised in the U.S. I’ve had my share of racism and descrimination. However, I don’t believe that because you oppose the views of someone else that you’re being racist to that person if they’re not of your race. Not everyone sees color like racist people do. If we want to throw the “race card” when things don’t go our way or see that people of your own race are having tough times, then, to a certain extent, that makes you a racist person yourself. My entire life, I’ve lived and enjoyed and believed in the kinship of many races. For 24 years, I’ve enjoyed living in a predominant black neighborhood. Most of all my close friends from school are black people. Not once did I despise their race nor did I make inferior remarks towards their race. They too accepted and respected my race. Up to this date, I embrace the idea of all races being treated equally and with respect. Though all cultures and race have different idealogies, I am one who can honestly say that I don’t measure a person by the tone of their skin. That doesn’t make them any better than the person next to them.
To come to a conclusion, I don’t agree with most of the things that are occuring in Washington, campaign promises and strategies that the now President made are not being met. There are issues that are not being fairly debated just to show solidarity to a political party. My disagreement is in no way against his race. I embrace and love the fact that we have a “black man, by the name of Barack Obama, who is President of the United States of America.” It’s what’s being done in Washington that I don’t embrace. What’s happening in the White House and in Capitol Hill isn’t happening because he’s black. Decisions and actions are being made because of ideaologies and strategies that a political party has devised and he’s accepted, from his cabinet to the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader. So maybe we should speculate on that aspect and see if we don’t throw a “race card” whenever criticism comes up against our President. I never have used it when people don’t agree with me.
One thing I know for sure is that racism is alive and kicking in the Dallas area. I substitute teach for the Terrell ISD, the Forney ISD, the Crandal ISD, and the Royse City ISD, and I see a lot of anger in black youth today. It is rediculous to me that so many people are still fighting the Civil War! Some of the things I have heard these kids say is just incredible. The hatred is being handed down from generation to generation, and it is not exclusive to any one race. Whites teach their children to hate Blacks and Mexicans, Blacks teach their children to hate Whites and Mexicans, and Mexicans teach their children to hate Whites and Blacks. I talk to these kids and hear them say this. Personally I think it is time to let it go. I my self have been the victim of prejudice. When I first met my husbands parents they utomatically assumed I hated blacks simply because my family is from the south. My Dad was born in Louisianna and was raised in Mississippi. Nothing could be further from the truth. My Dad was the most unprejudiced and unbiased person you could ever meet. He always taught me to judge a person by who they are, not where they come from or what race they are. Many times he told me it does not matter if you live in a rich house or a poor house, what matters is that your house is clean. It does not matter what clothes you wear as long as your clothes are clean. What he was saying is that it matters what kind of person you are. Are you honest and truthful. Do you have integrity. I think more people need to look at themself before they start judging other people.
racisim is everywhere now days. today there may be racism in your own culture. No one has respect for each other anymore. now a days our children are growing up disrespecting one another, from there peers and even parents. what is the world coming too?
I belive that since Abraham Lincoln freed slaves the discrimination should also be gone. Now everyone has equal rights and is equel discrimination against other cultures and races hould not be allowed. I’m not saying that everyone is racst but there are still many people who do not like african americans, hispanics, asians, etc. in this time to me the most discriminated ethnicities are hispanics and africanamericans, even though blcks have been freed years ago they are still discriminated for many people. Also hispanics have been descriminated for being elegal since we form a great part of the population in this country many people do not want us to be legan or to grow.
If there is anyone out there that think that racism doesn’t exist today they have to be blind, death, and dumb. It’s everywhere, i see it everyday. If a person of another race could just be BLACK FOR A DAY they would see what we’re talking about. Yes there are some people out there that pull the race card to benefit them in some kind of way. 90 percent of the time that’s not the case. I experience some type of racism everyday, just out shopping and dining. If i decide to shop in an area where there are majority whites OMG the display so many racist actions. They do it all but call me a “nigga.” There is racism within different races but its slim to none. For the ones that say people aren’t racist towards the new president, you are just lieing to yourself. This man get death threats everyday because of his skin color and no matter how he try to cater to the republicans and meet them half-way they still seem to find something wrong with him and he can never satisfy them. I don’t think it will ever end.
Racism exist everywhere, no matter our race, color, gender or culture and sad to see that we live in a society in which many people place their selves and a position superior than others due to their ethnic background or culture even financial status. As we see it happening in our surroundings racism could be express in so many ways from verbal words, actions and thoughts. Mr. Bowtie professor has a great valuable point here, even our government doesn’t practice what the preach, and as we see it happening with regular citizens it happens within the government as well.
Racism is obviously still alive and well 150 years after slavery was abolished. Interestingly, the hatred and lies that surround politics has been impacted with even more trouble through the constant turmoil with racism. If Congressmen and officials even think about our doing what they say, they should attempt to follow along in the same lines.
GOVT 2302-4002 MWF
This is Danielle Barnett from your Tuesday and Thursday class from 11:00 till 12:20. I agree with what you said here. I think people in this country are scared of change and a black man being president is just the beginning for the things to come in this country. Personally I say, “Bring it on!”
Everybody, not only African Americans, but Hispanics, Asians, Caucasians, etc., all go through racism/segregation everyday. For example, I am an African American female and when I go into stores run by Asians, I ALWAYS get watched like I’m about to steal something. My previous teacher [extremely wealthy African American woman] went to Nordstroms one day, wearing sweatpants and i sweater. When she walked in and began browsing through the clothes, the saleswomen [all white] began watching her, and NOBODY came up to assist her with anything. A white woman dressed very nicely came in and the women went to go help her. When my previous teacher went to go purchase the clothes, the saleswomen all looked dumbfounded. They thought since an African American woman, who did not look “rich” came into their store, that she didn’t have enough money, or was there to steal, when the white lady who looked really nice actually stole some items from the store. I’ve seen many people do and say certain things based on the color of the other person’s skin. Racism still exists, and in my opinion, will never completely go away.
I think that those people against Obama are afraid of change. They are used to always having things their way and the moment that something like this happens the racists in them comes out. But everyone has to understand that we are not living in the world we used to live in. Everyone has freedom now and anything can happen, and we have to accept that and just give support because we are all living in the same nation. When a major disaster happens in the world the people involved don’t care who helps them as long as they get help, they don’t deny a helping hand if it is black, brown, or white. It is obvious that racism still exists in the world, and it is not just between blacks and whites, every ethnicity is involved. I believe that this will never end because kids learn it from their parents and those kids will teach their kids and so on.
I do think that racism continues to exist in our society, because i actually witness people who are not white, getting treated differently. I work at a restaurant in highland park and maybe 95 percent of the customers that come in are white and when rarely a black or hispanic comes in, people tend to act differently. I dont think thats right, because if people havent noticed, their current president is indeed black. They need to accept change. Just because you are a person of color, that doesnt mean you are not human.
I do think that your right racism continues to exist in our society today. all one has to do is open there eyes. i witness people who are not white, getting treated differently. I work at the olive garden in mesquite and iv noticed that people such as the waitors prejudge the people who appear to be of color or tend to fit a typical sterotype because they feel that they will not tip as well as say a white person would. I dont think thats right. even with people in “interatial marriage” it should not matter and so many people look down upon a white woman with a black man still today in 2010 if we were all blind it would certainly not matter what color we are. so again proffesor your 100% correct
MWF 11:10
Racism is the flith of America that probably grew stronger because of the Black Presidency. Though it may not be a obvious to the average American, it is if there is some research done. Some Americans sincerely do not care about race, but hate groups definately do. And apparently, there numbers have had been on a major increase since the election. I believe there are pocket racists everywhere anyways. And I don’t think it will die any time soon.

Govt. 2302
Racism is very much alive today. I am a dual enrollment student, and see it on a day to day basis in high school. People take racism too far at times, sometimes joking around can even be foolish. Why treat other ethnic groups as if you are so superior? Everyone has equal opportunities, and equal freedom as on another. No body should be viewed as an outcast in society. All men and women are created equally, was not said just to make everyone feel better, it was said to PROVE a point.
Govt. 2301, M-W 5.35
Perhaps I am making too much out of all this, but Racism is what I am seeing in the attacks from the Right-Fox on Obama-care(as they call it, to paint it pinko-communist). The people that attack the President are exploiting this under-current of racist. I maybe making too much out if it, but I have this gut feeling that this is happening. He has lifted his fists and asked for an open fight in the court of public opinion. So, he has reead the polls, they are(the citizens) are on his side.
But, this fight has started to get nasty. I wish back to the days of Roosevelt’s famous cocktails reunions, and Truman’s Burbon parleys with both sides of the political spectrum. Let us not forget the great President Johnson that know more about a person that J. Edgar Hoover. He did the political game like a pro. He liked to talk and knew how to use people from both sides of the political spectrum. He would come to you and say “You want a judge confirmed Ok, but I need you vote on Civil Rights”. If it was not for him, the major Civil Rights Bills would still be a dream. Johnson, knew that the legislation he got passed would be the end of the Southern-crats staying in the Democratic party and the south would go Republican very quickly. But, he put country before party.
But, still I feel that there is an underlying flame of racism in these attacks against our President Obama. I like to watch Fox because I want to know what the enemy is thinking. There was interchange between the Irish O’Reilly on Fox and a Democratic congressman about that the government was going to hire 15,000 more IRS agents(as if they were the FBI agents, and Nixon’s use of the IRS) AS Jeffrey Hernandez says thay are called “hate groups”.
See how the question as worded. The Question was frankly inflammatory and insinuating. What is wrong with people paying taxes. We need 15,000 more people in the SEC too.
Racism is everywhere. Many think that racism has significantly decreased throughout the years, but it has not vanished completely. Being a dual enrollment student, I witness firsthand high school racism. In one of my classes, there is a white male and a black male that are constantly throwing out racial slurs at eachother. They always do it in a joking manner, but it never ends. Others in the class become offended and hurt by what they are saying. Something needs to be done about racism.
racism is everywhere when you turn the corner you are going to see someone get critized and you cant say that you have never been racist to someone cause you would be lien if you did. people now a days hang out wit people of there own race and if someone new came into the club that wasnt like all of yall you would make fun of them even if you were playing around its still racism. people just dont understand how they make that one person feel intill they get critize themself.
Racism is very much alive in America. No matter who you are, or where you come from racism has a way of hurting someone. Racism is pure ignorance in it’s truest form. I do not believe that anyone should judge other’s by the color of one’s skin but the person’s actions. I think the people should open up thier mind first, before casting judgement on someone’s race or background.
Yes, racism is still going on and i think it’s going to go on forever!! So it’s said when you go to apply for a job that everyone has an equal opportunity, yeah right.. If you go to a Mexican Restaurant to apply for a job opening and you are an African American more than likely you will not get the job. Why are we still being judge by the color of our skin? Many people have fought for this reason, and it has helped. But, racism is endless!
True enough racism is still alive in the USA. But at what level is the question? I feel that racism amongst ourselves toward each other is stronger then that of one race aagainst another. As a white male from Georgia, and being married to a black woman for 23 years, I have heard it all and experienced racism on all levels. But aeven after all these years, we still ger more flack from african americans then from any other race. There are many Blacks that argue that Obama is not a true black man, rather than a puppet of the goverment. What can he do or has he done for me as a black man, is the question i hear being asked by many in the black community. Until we as a whole get off of this race card as an excuse, and start handling our own businees, this game will continue with the next generatonas well.
Racism will always exist in america no matter how hard we try to stop it. It is up to you on how you will handle the situations you will confront. I have only had a couple of times where i had been made fun of or put down because of my race but theres always a way to handle things differently and make the other person somewhat realize what they are doing. this may not even have nothing to do with what the topic is about but it is what i think about when i see things about racism and what i think about this article.
I don’t understand how one is judged on the color of their skin. If I could choose the color of my skin, I would pick the color that of course would in more favor for me. That would get me further in life, help me to accomplish more. One should not be judged on the color of their skin, size, age, religion, etc.
i agree with you. It is not about what color you are or where you come from nut what is within you. We are all the same in the inside, despite our thoughts and feelings. Many people were very angry when Obama became president because of his color, even some of my friends. His color was the least of my worries. It was other reasons why i was upset, but well let’s not get into that. What a men can do to change a nation is what matter the most. It is sad to know that many people in the white house are very angry abou this and are willing to do anything to take him out. I bet is very hard for Obama and his family to live confortable. His already a president but he is also a black president to some. I am very glad that a little flavor was added to our nation. It was about time somebody broke the chain. Now, we should all bless our president and pray for him so God can give him wisdom and knoweledge to run this country.
Class Monday and Wednesday 7:05-8:25 Yes we still have racism and I think when Obama became president it spoke for itself. People re also teaching their kids about racism, so beaware world nothing is going to chsnge.
Racism has and will always continue to be a big issue in this great nation because we are exposed to so many different customs and ethnics groups that we are not used to. This and many other things like politics, religion, and education all affect the way we feel and act toward ather ethnic groups. I think in order for this nonsence to end more education about other ethnic groups should be thought in school so that children dont grow up feeling the same way that their parents may have felt. Instead of just saying your mad because of this or we are better than you because of that, immediate actions should be taken to stop this ongoing seed of racism.
I agree that racism still exists today. I believe that it happens to more races than just African Americans. And I believe that some African Americans are racist. I do not like that the world is still like this but there’s no denying that racism and discrimination happen everyday. I am not racist. I think that every individual is unique and their appearance is part of them but a person should not be judged solely on that alone. I like that Obama became president it shows that different faces can fill the position on the highest level which is the president of the United States. It shows that people of different ethnic backgrounds can succeed if they put there mind to it. I think if people can stop being racist this world will grow so much more, but who knows if that day will ever come.
T TH 11
There is no doubt in my mind, there always has and always will be racism, now in America still is racism not as much as it used to be back in the days of slavery and depression. I believe it is due to the experiences throughout one’s life, their negative interactions with a group that causes racism to develop. The more openly practiced forms of racism are in majority passed down from family or other guardianships. Also why color, or race should be an issue? Racism should not exist we are all people. Some people who are racist they do not like how people from different skin color or race talk, act or are different from themselves, due in part because it seems odd or out of the ordinary from the actions which they are accustomed to. These sorts of people will always exist, and nothing can change that. About Obama been a half black president had started lots of controversy. But! Obama is proof that anyone of any race can be anything they want if they work hard, study, and present themselves in a positive manner. In my opinion Racism is ridiculous and unreasonable.
i completely agree with you. its amazing how racism continues to reside in the U.S. even till today. Obama was a prime example of this, and i find it very sad. being a black woman my self, i rarely fail to expirience this on a daily basis. i also feel like it is only the uneducated people who scream for less goverment intervention yet want to keep recieveing tax breaks from that same goverment. stupid!!!!
Racism is here to stay. It bothers me that I had to say that. Why cant we just get along with one another? Why cant we be a race of people instead of individual race’s? Ive experienced racism and still do today. I dont let it get me down, I keep fighting for my rights as well as others. I believe many in America love the fact that we are divided amongst race’s and that bothers me everyday. One should see that racism must die. Interracial marraige and couples are on the rise, which should be a sign to all that, theirs alot of people out there that want to come together. Make the change America and lets end racism.
I know that racism exists, and it probably always will, but how can we as a nation get past it when it is always shoved into everyones face. Every time you turn around there is something here or there that is racist. When Obama was elected, it was for sure a huge deal, however why was it every time his name was brought up it was attched to his race. I do not care what color or race you are. We will never get past racism in this country as long as people always bring it up, i am not saying to ignore it but rather figure out a way to fix it.
Republican and Conservitives alike do want a smaller govt. and there was many opponents to the worthless 850 Billion bailout. Even though The President said it HAD to be done to stop the downward spiral the economy was facing. And as far as the Health Care Bill is designed to help “the poor and common man” and the Republicans being in the back pockets of the insurance companies, what about the Unions and the activists groups? whos in their pockets? the Dems. and Liberals. So thats ok? They are all interst groups that have two things in mind, money and power.
The Tea Parties are not a racist group, there has been no proof of the so called racial epithets being reported. Republicans are not racists, Conservatives are not racists. As you have pointed out, there are racists entities in any group you look at. The NAACP is a good example, the New Black Panthers as well, i am sure that they are not all racists but there are for sure racists in those groups. If you are gonna accuse some Repubs. and Conservatives of you have to look at other groups as well. How about the leader of the New Black Panthers yelling about hating crackers, and killing white babies. That is pretty racist, or when the same guy was outside of a polling place intimidating white voters coming to cast their ballot. Why was that case dropped by Eric Holder? If it was the KKK doing that, the case would have never been dropped. Why is it any different for The New Black Panther Party, why did the get away with it?
I am not upset that Obama is the persident, i am upset @ his policies and what he is trying to do. As he put it in his campaign speech “to fundamentally transform the United States”. There are things that need to be fixed for sure, but there has to be better ways to do it. When will the administration quit blaming Pres. Bush for everything that is going wrong. When will they man up and say, we need to handle this, it sucks we got some things the way they are but it is what it is. Why is it always someone elses fault?
the housing market….Clinton had something to do with that with the “Fair housing Law” taht was passed during tenure. if you want to point fingers and all. sorry, got off on a tangent. =)
I have yet to hear anything remotely related to racisn when it comes to the commentators on Fox News. I watch them quite a bit and have never heard them say or doing anything racists. For you to call them racists is way off base. Just because they disagree with what the President is doing, it automatically makes that person a racist? Whay can we not disagree with him? We are entitled to disagree with the administration, that is our right.
I am not angry or hurt that a 1/2 black man is president, like i said before, i do not like his policies. and for you to say you know why they are angry and hurt, because “it strikes down any notion of white supremacy” is totally asinine.
We will probably disagree on many political things Professor, but one thing i like is you are not afraid to speak your mind. I am the same way andi like that about you. One thing i will agree with you about is, God is the answer and the salvation and the truth.
